Empowering Connection: How Professional Staff Strengthen a Culture of Wellness

At the Colorado State Patrol, our mission is to ensure a safe and secure Colorado for all. But behind every mission statement is a truth we live daily—our people are our greatest asset. When we care for the well-being of those who serve, we strengthen the entire organization.

This message was at the heart of a presentation I was honored to deliver at the 2025 IACP Annual Conference alongside my colleagues Captain Darrell Aulston and Director Dolores Poeppel. Together, we shared how the Colorado State Patrol refined its wellness program by engaging professional staff as the essential connectors they are. Present in every corner of the organization, professional staff often serve as the bridge between units, divisions, and leadership.

By equipping them with wellness resources and granting wellness hours, we expanded our reach far beyond traditional programming—allowing wellness to grow through relationships, trust, and genuine care. This approach transformed wellness from an initiative into a culture. Participation increased across all ranks, stigma decreased, and well-being became a shared responsibility.

It reminded us that professional staff are not simply support—they are strategic partners in building resilient, high-performing, and compassionate public safety organizations.

The National Association of Professional Staff in Public Safety (NAPSP) champions this same vision: advancing the impact of professional staff through connection, collaboration, and leadership. When agencies invest in their people and empower every member—sworn and professional alike—to take part in wellness, innovation, and engagement—they don’t just build stronger organizations. They build stronger communities.

Together, we’re proving that the strength of public safety begins with the people who serve within it.
